Here's the link to the blog that the kids used to start and build this project. Try to read it from the very bottom (October 15th) to see the investigation, communication, and writing skills used, and to see the development of the project through the kids' eyes.

They ended up raising $823.82.

Okay.
1. Water for Africa may sell during AO, but I don't think there will be many who make and bring more bracelets.
2. You guys only got permission to do the lemon challenge, not ornaments.
3. Everybody calm down. You are doing a great thing. Just take it easy. Everything will work out.
4. Water for Africa raised $616.27

Ms. Caston-Smith
I'm sorry. I couldn't think straight during all the chaos, and I now realize that we did not include the ornaments in our proposal that Dr. Jarnagin signed. We can't go beyond what our proposal stated, but I think you could charge $1 donation to take the lemon challenge, and then ask for an additional donation.
The ornaments, if you guys are set on doing them, could be the bonus for them, an appreciation gift for their contribution. How does that work for you guys? That's the best I can come up with in my state of exhaustion.

I just got home.
Jen Spell
Is it possible if we email Dr. Jarnigan before Monday?
Ms. Caston-Smith
We are already pushing the envelope, so to speak, and they've given me a lot of leeway. I do not want to ask for further changes. The fundraisers must be approved a week in advance, you guys.
Jen Spell
Oh okay.
Nov 21, 4:50pm
Ms. Caston-Smith
So feel free to make the ornaments. Seriously. $1=lemon challenge. $2 or more = lemon challenge and a thank you ornament if you guys are willing to go that way, but we cannot sell the ornaments. What a great idea, though!
Nov 21, 4:55pm
Ms. Caston-Smith
1st world problems, kids. All is well. Go home and give thanks. Signing off.

Everyone have a great thanksgiving. We've done a lot so far and I hope we can do more. Let's take a week break and come back refreshed and renewed next Monday

Hey guys! Make sure you take this survey ASAP! We need to make a decision today.

Thanks,
Jen and Maggie

OHOH Meeting Summary

At the meeting today, we made a few decisions. We decided to make Christmas ornament type things out of pipe cleaner and beads (see picture attached). Instead of shaping it like a candy cane, we will shape it like a ribbon and use yellow and white beads to cover it. We are going to sell them for $1 during AO all week and during lunch as well. There will be a video posted to the group me about how to make them. We also decided to change the price of the challenge to free so that people will do it and then donate. As most of you know, water for Africa asked to sell bracelets during our week after thanksgiving. We took a vote of the people who stuck around and the majority voted no. We hung up our posters in all of the stairwells and ended up with 3 in each one. Overall, it was a pretty good meeting, and we now have a plan going into this!

3rd Period Ideas

I was thinking that for the week we do the lemon challenge we should provide paper towels for the participants. I also think that we should have a a signup for each class period so each class period has an equal opportunity to participate. I wrote down some of these things on the lists that Ms. Caston- Smith is passing out today.

And the lemon challenge social media blitz has begun! The videos have been posted and others are starting to take the challenge as well! I've heard that people are donating money and it is working out fabulously! Also, Reece and Jen made an instagram account for this group so make sure you follow @ohohsphs ! We are nearing 100 followers on the account and it hasn't even been a full day! OHOHsphs is the buzz right now (: Unfortunately, movie night will not work out due to costs, but the basketball game is looking great! We need to decide on a date and get back in touch with Coach Barker. Pertaining to the donation box email, I have not gotten any response from Dr. J or Mr. Hill. Hopefully they will reply soon! Don't forget the rules for the lemon challenge! (rules have been posted on ig account)
RULES:
-take a video of yourself sucking on a lemon for 5 seconds
-at the end, say "I would do anything to end childhood cancer. What would you do?"
-use #cancersucks and tag @OHOHSPHS and people that you want to take the challenge
-POST IT!

Update on Scrimmage

Jane Linley and I talked to Coach Barker yesterday in AO. He said that he was interested, but we could not do it anytime after their season. This is because he is legally not allowed to coach his team outside of the season in basketball. He also said that he did not want to do it during their area tournament, although he gave me no specific dates. I am not sure when the area tournament is, but their regular season ends sometime in early February according to the schedule on the Spain Park website.

What do you guys think, as far as dates go? Is early December okay?

Also, does anyone have any new ideas about how to get this project moving?

Class Project - OHOH Fundraiser Permission

Dear Mr. Hill and Dr. Jarnagin,

For our class project, the students from Ms. Caston-Smith's Pre-AP English 9 classes (and three who have recently joined the group) have decided that we would like to raise money and awareness for Open Hands Overflowing Hearts, an organization that supports those who are suffering from childhood cancer or know someone who is and donates money to pediatric cancer research. Some of us have known Kayla Perry, the founder of the organization, for a while and know that she is truly a blessing to this world. She has Neuroblastoma and began OHOH to inform people of the severity of childhood cancer. We would love to support her by using the table in the back of the cafeteria to collect donations and raise awareness for this amazing cause.
We had the idea of bringing the lemon challenge that Kayla started to Spain Park. The challenge is taking a video of yourself sucking on a lemon for 5 seconds and then posting to social media, similar to the ALS ice bucket challenge. When you take the challenge, or even if you don't, you donate $3 at the link below. However, we know kids don't have credit cards, so we thought of putting lemons on the donation table in the back of the cafeteria along with donation boxes. Then, we could make an announcement about what it is and that you can come to the table and take the challenge, but you have to donate the $3 first. Could we possibly reserve this table for the first week of December, the 1st-5th?

Our social media blitz begins this weekend with every member of our group taking the lemon challenge and posting to their preferred social media. We challenge you and all the teachers to join us and take the challenge as well. When you take the challenge, make sure at the end you say, "I would do anything to end childhood cancer. What would you do?" To donate, use the link below.

Change of Plans

I just realized that basketball will be practicing during 7th period. Me and Jane Linley are going to talk to Coach Barker at the beginning of lunch.

Basketball Scrimmage

I will talk to Coach Barker and/or Coach Chase today during 7th period about the basketball game. I will tell them our ideas and get their input on dates, times, etc. to see if they will be willing to do this. Is there anything you guys want me to address specifically, let me know! Let's raise some awareness!!

7th Period Flyer thoughts

We like the flyer, however, since it will be on the staris and on TVs, people probably wouldn't have time to read all of the information on the flyer. We should have a bolded line, or something big that would catch people's eyes quickly. It is fine to have all of the rules, but we should have a large heading. If possible, we should try to cut down on the information on the flyer to make it as simple as possible. We think that it is possible to get all of the information out in less words. Maybe we could have two flyers- one just "LEMON CHALLENGE!!" and a couple of the basic steps and thats all? And maybe the informative one could be somewhere if people want more information, like there could be a basket of the specific steps and information flyers in the library (because most people walk by the library at some point in the day) where they could get a flyer?

7th period ideas

We think we should start thinking about the movie night event. Once we get the lemon challenge started, we should start on a bigger project. Here's a link to the survey 7th period made about the movie night:

MEETING ON FRIDAY

-We will meet on Friday to finalize emails, and discuss next steps on Lemon challenge, basketball ideas, and movie night.
-Send the emails to Mr.Hill and Dr.J by Friday
-Discuss hanging up posters in the hallway.
-If someone would volunteer to bring lemons on friday during AO so we can all do the lemon challenge that would be extremely helpful.
-Possibly make posters for the lemon challenge and donations
-Assign Specific assignments for what to do in every class period to maximize productivity on project

5th Period Progress

We looked at Kayla's blog, and we found a youtube video of her dad telling the rules that they came up with for the "Cancer Sucks" Challenge. If you want to know exactly how they did the challenge, watch the video. Also, we starting coming up with the ideas for organizing the scrimmage. We did not know what your thoughts were so if you could fill out the survey, that would be awesome! Thanks so much!

Form for scrimmage organization-5th Period

Link to the Official Rules of Lemon Challenge by Kayla's Dad

  • Meetings every Friday might not work out due to the fact Ms. Caston-Smith could have other stuff to do. We could try every other Friday maybe, unless we have something that needs to be discussed immediately.

  • Pertaining to the donation boxes, maybe during a Wednesday AO, we could all meet and decorate a few boxes to set up. We could discuss this in the meeting next Friday, and then make boxes the Wednesday after that. Ms. Caston-Smith had the idea of having a bell on the table at the back of the cafeteria that people could ring when they donate, so it'll catch peoples attention.  Leave your opinions on this please.

Adding onto the email started by a previous period: Please keep adding until it is good (this would be if Jen sent the email)
