Class Project - OHOH Fundraiser Permission

Dear Mr. Hill and Dr. Jarnagin,

For our class project, the students from Ms. Caston-Smith's Pre-AP English 9 classes (and three who have recently joined the group) have decided that we would like to raise money and awareness for Open Hands Overflowing Hearts, an organization that supports those who are suffering from childhood cancer or know someone who is and donates money to pediatric cancer research. Some of us have known Kayla Perry, the founder of the organization, for a while and know that she is truly a blessing to this world. She has Neuroblastoma and began OHOH to inform people of the severity of childhood cancer. We would love to support her by using the table in the back of the cafeteria to collect donations and raise awareness for this amazing cause.
We had the idea of bringing the lemon challenge that Kayla started to Spain Park. The challenge is taking a video of yourself sucking on a lemon for 5 seconds and then posting to social media, similar to the ALS ice bucket challenge. When you take the challenge, or even if you don't, you donate $3 at the link below. However, we know kids don't have credit cards, so we thought of putting lemons on the donation table in the back of the cafeteria along with donation boxes. Then, we could make an announcement about what it is and that you can come to the table and take the challenge, but you have to donate the $3 first. Could we possibly reserve this table for the first week of December, the 1st-5th?

Our social media blitz begins this weekend with every member of our group taking the lemon challenge and posting to their preferred social media. We challenge you and all the teachers to join us and take the challenge as well. When you take the challenge, make sure at the end you say, "I would do anything to end childhood cancer. What would you do?" To donate, use the link below.

7th Period Flyer thoughts

We like the flyer, however, since it will be on the staris and on TVs, people probably wouldn't have time to read all of the information on the flyer. We should have a bolded line, or something big that would catch people's eyes quickly. It is fine to have all of the rules, but we should have a large heading. If possible, we should try to cut down on the information on the flyer to make it as simple as possible. We think that it is possible to get all of the information out in less words. Maybe we could have two flyers- one just "LEMON CHALLENGE!!" and a couple of the basic steps and thats all? And maybe the informative one could be somewhere if people want more information, like there could be a basket of the specific steps and information flyers in the library (because most people walk by the library at some point in the day) where they could get a flyer?

7th period ideas

We think we should start thinking about the movie night event. Once we get the lemon challenge started, we should start on a bigger project. Here's a link to the survey 7th period made about the movie night:

MEETING ON FRIDAY

-We will meet on Friday to finalize emails, and discuss next steps on Lemon challenge, basketball ideas, and movie night.
-Send the emails to Mr.Hill and Dr.J by Friday
-Discuss hanging up posters in the hallway.
-If someone would volunteer to bring lemons on friday during AO so we can all do the lemon challenge that would be extremely helpful.
-Possibly make posters for the lemon challenge and donations
-Assign Specific assignments for what to do in every class period to maximize productivity on project

We really like the flyer for the rules and think should go on the TVs and a couple in the stairwells.

anyone can vies

5th Period Progress

We looked at Kayla's blog, and we found a youtube video of her dad telling the rules that they came up with for the "Cancer Sucks" Challenge. If you want to know exactly how they did the challenge, watch the video. Also, we starting coming up with the ideas for organizing the scrimmage. We did not know what your thoughts were so if you could fill out the survey, that would be awesome! Thanks so much!

Form for scrimmage organization-5th Period

Link to the Official Rules of Lemon Challenge by Kayla's Dad

  • Meetings every Friday might not work out due to the fact Ms. Caston-Smith could have other stuff to do. We could try every other Friday maybe, unless we have something that needs to be discussed immediately.

  • Pertaining to the donation boxes, maybe during a Wednesday AO, we could all meet and decorate a few boxes to set up. We could discuss this in the meeting next Friday, and then make boxes the Wednesday after that. Ms. Caston-Smith had the idea of having a bell on the table at the back of the cafeteria that people could ring when they donate, so it'll catch peoples attention.  Leave your opinions on this please.

Adding onto the email started by a previous period: Please keep adding until it is good (this would be if Jen sent the email)

Hello, Mr. Hill! For our class project, the students from Ms. Caston-Smith's Pre-AP English 9 classes have decided that we would like to raise money and awareness for Open Hands Overflowing Hearts, an organization that supports those who are suffering from childhood cancer or know someone who is. I have known Kayla for the majority of my life and know that she is truly a blessing to this world. She has Neuroblastoma and began OHOH to inform people of the severity of childhood cancer. We would love to support her by using the donation table where true blue jerseys are sold to collect donations and raise awareness for this amazing cause.

email for mr. hill about lunch idea

Add on next class until think good enough
Dear Mr. Hill
I am e-mailing you to inform you that the students from Pre-AP English 9 in Ms. Caston-Smith's class would like to use the donation table where true blue jerseys are sold to collect donations for OHOH and to raise awareness for Kayla's cause

6th Period

Mr. Hill visited our class today and he listened to the different projects we were doing. He listened to us and as Reece explained what it was about he took notes and we will be able to ask for help from him in the future.

Lemon Idea-

  1. $10 is donation

  2. 5 seconds sucking on lemon

  3. Any social media that you have

  4. All of OHOH members get together at some time (AO Tomorrow hopefully) and we all start the ¨Cancer Sucks Lemons Challenge¨ #CancerSucks

Lunch-

  1. A table outside next to cafe. with donation box available

  2. Donation announcement -speaker needs to be good-

  3. Put lemon on every lunch table so people will question why its there

3rd Period:

Jen and I thought of an idea very similar to the ALS ice bucket challenge. Kayla already has attempted to begin something like this with her cancer sucks lemon challenge. It wasn't as effective as she had expected so we decided to try something like that but make it a little different. This would be very doable and we could each nominate 3 people; a friend in english, a friend not in  Ms. Caston-Smith's english, and maybe your parent. If you decide to take the challenge then you will donate $5 to OHOH (on the website). Since kids don't have credit cards and it might be difficult for kids to donate online, you could also donate to the donation boxes. This would incorporate our idea with the idea of the donation boxes. We could also get Dr. J involved by having him do the challenge at an assembly or something. We could also intertwine this with the idea of having Kayla come speak by asking her to come when we have an assembly (we can try to request having one).

  • Pie in the face (maybe more like whip cream on a plate or in a pie tin) #WhipCancersButt

  • suck/bite on a lemon (get younger children to do this because they have hilarious reactions and also it is for childhood cancer. We still need to keep it open to all ages though.)  #CancerSucks

Meeting Topics: (please add to this 6th period)

Don't forget we are having a meeting in Ms. Caston-Smith's room tomorrow during AO. It is very important that you attend as we will be discussing tons of important information.

-decide upon one or two ideas to take action on

-possibly have each period come up and explain what they've done

-GET EVERYONE IN THE GROUP ME (unless they don't have that access)

5th period-

We thought that there are too many projects going on at once and that each period should do one of the things and focus on that one. We could use the Group Me for dates and locations to meet. Ms. Caston-Smith wants all of the OHOH group members to meet in her AO on Friday to talk about many projects we want to do. We all need to remember that we need a class sponsor for each project and she is already doing many of them for the other class projects going on. Our idea is to have a scrimmage between the basketball teams and they dress up in gold costumes and we get our donations from tickets. People would like to come because it would be funny and will raise awareness for it. Before the game, we could talk about the cancer and have a ribbon for people to raise up if they have been affected with it or knows someone who has and we could post it on social media to raise more awareness. Our class has many ideas that we would like to share and we would like to hear from y'all about your ideas. Everyone needs to download and join the OHOH Group Me to know important info.

7th period accomplishments:

Here is the email we started. Please add on to and complete the email. Post the final product so everyone can edit it. As soon as we get it edited, we will send it to Dr.Jarnagin. Thanks!

Dear Dr. Jarnagin,

We are Ms. Caston-Smith's pre-ap 9th grade language arts class. Ms. Caston-Smith has assigned us a project where we use writing to benefit our community. We broke up into groups with different project ideas and our group has decided to raise awareness and donate for Open Hands Overflowing Hearts. As a whole, all of Ms. Caston-Smith's classes who desire to accomplish this task have joined together and hope to accomplish many small little projects to raise awareness and hopefully have one big project. In order for our group to accomplish this goal, we need your permission to start posting flyers around the school and build up to donations and a festival at Veteran's Park.

7th Period:

The google docs won't let me post the results of the survey, but I'll just summarize.

Results for the survey:

-Most people decided we should do donation boxes around school, flyers/posters around school, a day where everyone wears gold, and get Kayla to speak to SPHS as a school about her experience. (projects inside of school).

-The majority of students would like to have a charity sporting event sponsoring a goal, a movie night in gym, veteran's park festival raising awareness for OHOH (something everyone would be interested in-maybe not necessarily football), and an assembly where Kayla comes and talks to SPHS.

-As a group, tailgating at Veteran's Park and having a Veteran's Park festival were the most popular ideas that we would like to accomplish.

-Many students believe we should spend as much time needed to complete this project, during Wednesday AO, weekends, or 1-2 hours a week.

7th period progress!!!

7th period has started brainstorming what the first step in this project will be. We decided on e-mailing Dr. Jarnigan to get permission to post posters with facts about childhood cancer around the school. We want to start small and gradually build up to getting donations, and organizing fundraisers. We are starting the e-mail today, and we've posted it for the next classes to edit. Once we have heard back from Dr. J, we hope to have posters with facts from Kayla's blog under "Just the Facts".

What are your most immediate goals? What can you make happen soon?

2nd Period - Project Planning

Iron Bowl Party
contact people at Veterans and Dr J about getting permission
permit to sell food
raise funds to pay for event
advertising
set a date and time
adults who are willing to volunteer (maybe 1 or 2 police officers)
figure out where we're going to cook food and how to transport it
coleauge@ci.hoover.al.us (contact to email veterans for permission for event and renting screen)
make sure we can make a profit

Movie Night
contact schools for permission to do event
include middle schools for after exams since we get out early
has to be G rated

Bake Sale
contact Dr J
time and date
post about when they want us to meet and where and what food to bring
find out how many volunteers we need and assign different days to different people to work

Contest
combine into one main competition instead of 4 different fundraising competitions

Boxes in lunchroom
ask for permission to put boxes in lunchroom

from Ms. C-S 22-23 October

Goals:

  • Publish results of your surveys here
  • Now that you've chosen the activity to raise money and awareness, determine how to proceed
  • Each class must post their progress on the plan.
  • Title your post your class period and main focus for that day. Ex. 1st period - Info on Charity

Ideas:
  • Publish the name of the charity and information about the charity
  • Does this charity gets a good rating as an honest charity that uses the majority of its funds for the projects and not themselves?
  • Research statistics on the need for this work? Use this information to promote awareness - Signs in stairwells with facts about this issue: interesting, colorful, thought-provoking tidbits - the awareness signs will make your audience more receptive to helping
    • What about personal stories about people who need this? (Don't go over the top)
    • How can you make it relate-able to the general Spain Park population?
    • Design your graphics and signage to attract and make them want to help.
  • Start a proposal for the activity you have planned if needed (in school or on ground activities will need approval from Dr. Jarnagin - needs to be in writing and approved by Ms. C-S).
  • Post your own ideas to draw in more support from other sources.

When you complete today's activities, complete this survey for me, please.

6th period contributions

If highlighted, we liked the idea.

IN SCHOOL:

- Donation boxes around the school. By the lunchroom and in the front- how would we make people aware of the boxes and make sure money is donated?

- Caston-Smith Classes competition. Winner gains a prize- competition and prizes is always a good way to go. What kinds of prizes?

- Donation box near front of the cafeteria- maybe not the best idea. most people forget about that table in the back maybe just an announcement

- digital Flyer on the TV- good idea

- Walk around collecting donations during AO- Announce the day before that donations will be collected the next day?

-Club for awareness- this would be a good thing to start- we would need a teacher sponsor

and need a time to meet. Maybe every other tuesday AO?

-Chick-fil-A for class/group/etc that donates most- everyone would be excited for this

-Day where everyone wears gold- maybe announce over intercom during announcements (more than once)

-get Andrew and Morgan to get Kayla to talk to school about her experience- this would inform people in the best way, and Jen cheers at the same place Andrew does and could get in touch with him easily- during a wednesday jag period she could come to the gym

-ask lunch ladies to ask students to donate extra money in lunch line- some students just use there lunch numbers and hurry to have enough time to eat, this might back up the lunch line.

-Flyer contest on OHOH whoever has best flyer (top 3?) gets prize

OUT OF SCHOOL:

- Charity sporting event, sponsoring per goal- maybe something like every mile walked your sponsors donate $ or something else (would need a max though)

- Movie night in gym and at elementary schools- how much would it cost? provide popcorn? At veterans probably

- Sell T-shirts- we would have to finance this to buy the shirts

- Ask Berry to have a day to come and talk to students (exams)

- Motion, Church of the Highlands, announcements at churches- definitely should do this one, very doable

- Tailgate Party for Alabama vs Auburn at Veterans Park (MOST EXCITED)  brainstorm ways to do this, games and stuff? Great Idea

-Assembly in AO educating students on OHOH and hand out- or sell bracelets/jewelry/ tshirt afterwards- if you donate 5 dollars you can get a bracelet (ones kayla is selling, have them shipped to sp and hand them out), $25 gets tshirt (also have shipped to sp)--make sure names are attached to donation

-Veterans Park festival- we would have to finance this

-spread awareness about the blog: http://kaylanicole42.blogspot.com/

- Caston-Smith Classes competition. Winner gains a prize- competition and prizes is always a good way to go. What kinds of prizes? Bonus points maybe?

- Ask lunch ladies if they want to donate change to cause- how would this work? money paid for lunch goes to cafeteria to buy more food

- Donation box near front of the cafeteria- maybe not the best idea. most people forget about that table in the back

- PE class, whoever makes most money gets free-dress day- this would get people excited. Most money over a week time period?

- Flyer on the TV- good idea

- Flyers on the staircase- this would be a good idea because everyone will be able to see these.

- Walk around collecting donations during AO- Announce the day before that donations will be collected the next day?

-sell food before school on wednesday or thursday

Open Hands Overflowing Hearts
2nd period, research which charities already contribute to this cause. Identify 2-3 of the best and decide which one you want to support. Brainstorm today ways to raise money and awareness of this charity. Post a list of ideas with any pros and cons you’ve thought of. Do what you can to delineate some deadlines for activities.
7thperiods, take the ideas from 2nd, add to them, and create a survey to poll your group on the actions they are willing to take.
5th period, start writing your mission statement and based on your period’s portion of the group, determine how much time outside of class you are willing to put into this project. Based on that and the results of yesterday’s poll, start an action plan.

3rd, & 6th periods, determine which actions you are prepared to act on and which need more before you can begin. Get the ball rolling on the project – assign people to tasks or create a survey to allow people to sign up for their tasks.
